Wordpress Blog Upgrades: The Intrigues, The Heartache And The Lessons!
By Chadrack at 15 September, 2009, 3:26 pm
Upgrading wordpress blogs is a topic that will always generate a lot interest. And this is rightly so because one wrong move could spell ‘C-R-A-S-H’ for your blog!
I’m sure that bloggers using the wordpress platform must have heaved a sigh of relief with the recent inclusion of the automatic upgrade option in admin dashboard in the latest versions.
In this post I want to relate the bitter experience I had this past couple of weeks trying to upgrade the home business marketing blog from the 2.6.1 version to the latest 2.8.4 version.
Deciding on this upgrade was really a difficult one for me because I’d tried a couple of times before now and there were problems doing so. On these two occasions I had tried to use the same method I used some time in December last year to upgrade to the 2.6.1 version but on both occasions there were problems. As a result I simply shelved the idea and continued with the 2.6.1 version. You can read about the simple steps that I used to upgrade here.
Now what I did in those two occasions was to simply create a test blog before attempting the upgrade. But on this occasion I lost the test blog. So, not ready to risk losing this blog I forgot everything about upgrading. But taken a decision earlier to do some major shake up here, I had to overcome my fears and take the bold step of upgrading to version 2.8.4.
Frankly There Is So Much Confusing Info About Upgrading Wordpress Blogs Out There!
If you search for “How to upgrade wordpress blog” on Google, you’ll receive 47,200,000 search results. That’s intimidating right? Well to have a clear understanding of what I was going into I had to do this and took time to read most of that information.
A look through the first few ones gives a guide for upgrading wordpress blogs which could be simply put as:
1. Backup Your Files
2. Backup Your Database
3. Download The Latest Version Of Wordpress
4. Unzip And Upload Latest Version Over-Writing Old Files Except Your Wp-Content Folder And Your Wp-Config.Php File.
5. Then Upgrade Your Database
This is was not different from the same process I used before. But this time, it brought me nothing but a crashed site and heartache!
Of course there is also the advice that in the event of any problem then you simply restore your backup and everything will be okay. But this was not to be. When things went wrong I tried to restore the backup files but 3 times nothing worked. For once when I thought I had gotten it I had a shocker. I discovered that though the home page was loading without any problem but the posts were returning a 404 error. In fact every link was returning a 404 error!
I was desperate. I feared I had lost everything. And the prospect of starting all over again was not really funny!
Now have you ever experienced such a problem with your wordpress upgrade? Then I’m sure you understand what I’m talking about here. That is why personally I’m so grateful to the wordpress team for saving everyone those pains since they have included the automatic upgrade option right in the dashboard with the recent versions. With this upgrading will not be the same again.
Nevertheless, in the next post I’ll share with you the simple method that helped me out of this mess. I’ll be sharing this believing that there is someone out there who may still be faced with this challenge. This blog is up again because in my desperation I had to try various methods and luckily one of them worked and frankly it turned out to be a really simple and quick method that any one can use any day and any time!
I hope to share this with in my next post. Keep a date with.
