Twitter.com: Social Networking or Social Selling?

social sellingWith the advent of web 2.0 which has been described as user driven, a lot of applications have been launched to enhance the concept of socializing with others on the internet. In a very short period of time the buzz words became social bookmarking, social networking and social selling.

Today people are connecting and communicating more than ever on the Internet. The days of one-way websites and brochure-ware brands are long gone. The new Web has people commenting, interacting, making friends, following, tweeting, and getting involved with the products and services they want to buy.

Internet marketers were not any way late in identifying the potential of all these. The result is what today is being regarded as social selling. The idea is simple – join social sites, build a network of ?friends? and using interactive language “sneak” in your products or services to your social contacts expecting a sale.

It?s the business potential of this that Twitter.com has become so popular amongst internet marketers right now. There are already reports of great successes using this form of social selling. For example Bill Crosby in this video reveals how he increased his twitter following to an outstanding 20,000 followers within 90 days! And the wonderful thing is that he has been able to make some cool cash with his huge “followership”.

Of course many people are opposed to this form of social selling. But that has not changed anything. Instead the trend has snowballed into something real big. Right now Twitter.com has become a buzz word among internet marketers out of the social networking sites.

The truth is social networks are taking the internet world by storm. The impact is already being felt in businesses in exciting and innovative ways. The saying that markets are conversations is true. Your market is talking about you whether you like it or not.

I believe that as a business person it’s always beneficial to take advantage of lucrative trends. Savvy business people know that one of the principles of business success is the ability of understanding the times and adapting your business to make the best use of the trends.

That is definitely true!

However, one is tempted to ask should Twitter.com be viewed just as a social selling site or as a social networking site? Are we not emphasizing too much the aspect of selling on Twitter.com to the detriment of the networking benefits?

I do believe that as a online business that wants to take advantage of the trends Twitter.com is, so far, the best option for integrating social selling as many have revealed. You can watch Bill Crosby?s free video here as proof. However, networking online through sites like twitter can be of greater benefits, or what do you think?

Twitter is what you make of it. You can use it to brand yourself, build relationships and pass along useful information to those who share your interests. While Twitter’s performance continues to improve, you still need to rely on third-party apps to get into the conversation.

@Elaine, twitter definitely is what you make of it. But don’t you think more networking should be involved rather than what many are really using twitter for?

@Shirley, thanks for the good words. I’m just trying to unburden my heart here :)

Social networking sites such as Twitter can provide more avenue for sales but tend to be successful for a limited range of services or goods. If the services or goods are not in the social sector they have limited results.
